The world has, remarkably, avoided a third world war, yet August offered little reassurance about the future of international peace and security. The September 2026 issue of The Legal International examines some of the legal developments shaping an increasingly strained international order — from the Federal Court of Australia’s decision on India’s attempt to register BASMATI as a certification trade mark, to the forthcoming proceedings in Nicaragua v. Germany before the International Court of Justice concerning Germany’s obligations in relation to Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Closer to home, we look at significant Lahore High Court rulings concerning religion, public order, environmental protection and governance, alongside the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s establishment of its first Court-Annexed Mediation Centre with the support of the European Union and UNDP. We also examine growing concerns surrounding restrictions affecting journalists working for international media organisations and the implications for freedom of reporting. This issue brings together developments from across the legal world with one purpose: to understand not merely what the law says, but why it matters.
